Lazy Sunday

puppy nap time
I did manage to find room to nap amongst the puppies

Today was an extremely lazy day. Got up late – which means 930a – had breakfast around 10a, then felt like napping around 11a. Which I promptly took advantage of with the puppies. When I go to nap, I have to get the blanket ready in advance of plopping myself down on the couch, and I have to choreograph that in advance, along with the blanket placement, because as soon as I make any subtle move toward the couch, the dogs are already jumping up to join me, so if I’m not careful, I could end up sitting on them. They aren’t terribly willing to move once they have settled on a spot, as you can see. Toby is between my knees, Anna by my feet, and Lola has wedged herself between the couch and my right elbow. Once we are all settled, I don’t move either. They are so comfy and warm and soft. It’s like having another blanket.

I should be working on my Trash2Trends project, but I have been in a constant state of physical pain, to some degree or another. This started about 3 months ago, when I had this muscle pain in my right leg. I went to a physical therapist, but they couldn’t help me, nothing improved. So I was referred to a chiropractor, who has been trying to help me, but nothing has improved and to be honest, it’s gotten worse. I wake up periodically with my right leg, from my hip to the back of my right knee, on fire with this excruciating pain. It would not go away and I had to take extra strength excedrin and an alevePM to get back to sleep, It disrupted my sleep and I don’t like being on drugs. The chiropractor directed me to get an MRI and sure enough, there is a bulging disc that needs correction. The NP I go to gave me some pain meds to get through the day. It takes the edge off, but I am still uncomfortable for most of the day, which is an improvement.

I go see a neurologist on Tuesday for a consult. I am not good with needles, nor do I want to take pain meds for the rest of my life, so at this point, I would rather have surgery than go on as I am. We shall see what the doc says.

On another note, the difference in charges for this surgery by different neurologists is astounding. At least $7500 between each one! This is one of the big problems with health insurance. I can compare the prices, which I like, but getting them all to agree on a decent price is crazy. It makes me nuts.

So I have not been feeling like myself lately, I haven’t been doing a lot of regular housework, laundry, dishes, sweeping; I haven’t been posting here or corresponding with my international friends; I haven’t been spending quality time with my husband or the puppies or kittens (save today). I don’t like being like this, I’m not being my true self and it feels off balance. I don’t like it. I am hoping for a safe and quick correction to this out of balance so that I can get back to my true self again.

I will see you around.

Lazy Sunday

I felt like these guys today.

I just wanted to lie around my feet hurt so badly. I don’t know what’s going on, but it hurts the bottoms of my feet to walk. I’m going to see a physical therapist this week for the pinched nerve in my hip, and a podiatrist next week.

I don’t know what’s going on, but it all hurts. This is bullshit.

I can’t sit because my ass hurts, but I can’t stand because my feet hurt. I feel like such an old woman, and I hate this because this means I can’t walk with the dogs, or with Nate; and I can’t sit and enjoy a book, or knitting or sewing or crocheting because my ass hurts and my leg will start to tingle and fall asleep.

My mother always said “it sucks getting old” and now I’m beginning to understand. Parts are breaking down, things don’t work the way they used to and it takes longer for recovery.

Bunch of crap.

Hope your day is better.

Lazy Sunday

It’s grey and rainy and cloudy today so a good day to do nothing. Although, as always with a house, there is always something to do, it’s just that today I am choosing not to do it.

I do however have to finish altering a curtain for a friend of mine. A very simple task, just cut and a straight stitch. I have decided not to be so perfect in my sewing anymore. I do my best and make it look good, but trying to be perfect was a losing battle. Nothing is ever totally straight and some stitches may look crooked but it causes me much less stress if I don’t worry about stuff like that.

And I also have a wrap that I have been knitting for over a year some time now that I really need to finish since it’s been an embarrassing long amount of time that I haven’t finished it and it looks really cool with awesome colors and with the weather changing I would really like to wear it.

(that was an awful run on sentence, wasn’t it?)

So, now time for a late lunch and to get to work! Well, it’s not really work if you enjoy what you do, right? So, back to having fun and playing with puppies and napping!

Enjoy your day.

vintage patterns

OMG, have you seen this?

A whole website dedicated to vintage (25+ years old) sewing patterns, available to view and some to purchase. I found a retro dress pattern that looks stylish and very easy to make, the Butterick “walk-away” dress pattern.

Like I need more projects for me to work on. You know, work just gets in the way of all the stuff I really want to do, you know?

I find some interesting vintage patterns at the thrift store from time to time, I always check out what may be there. That, and look for yarn. Always looking for yarn.

reversible carry-all bag

I have lots of this leftover fabric (this pink pattern and orange fabric are actually former bedsheets that I am repurposing into some other wonderful new things – I just love these colors!) that I am making into some wonderful new things, this reversible bag being one of them. I bought a book on bag sewing projects, that are pattern free, so I can modify the sizes to fit whatever I need. This is another test run project of the reversible bag that I made for a friend of mine. (sorry about the wrinkles, I am not big on ironing)

The pockets are bigger than what the pattern calls for, but who cares? You can fit your phone, wallet, and keys in these pockets without any worry. I also added some padding to the handles. I am starting another project in making a skirt out of mens ties and I am taking the ties apart so that I have more material to work with, so I take out the inside padding of the ties and you know how I hate to be wasteful, so I saved the tie padding and used it for padding inside these handles. It makes them stronger, softer, and more durable to use. I also added some soft iron-on interfacing to the orange fabric for a bit of structure to the bag. All in all, I think it turned out pretty good. Only took me about 2 hours to complete, from cutting to finished sewing.

The next time I make this bag though, I will alternate the material, in that I will have a main fabric and contrasting fabric sewn together, so that either inside or outside, it looks like the same bag. I have so much fabric I’m going through it all and just being crafty.

Anna loves looking out the window

All the snow here has melted and today it was sunny, breezy, and pretty temperate. And since it is getting darker later, I am feeling more motivated to do more things. I know this sounds like an excuse, but this cold winter weather and change in savings time makes me lethargic and unmotivated. I’m sure I’m not the only one, but it makes me feel sluggish. I suppose that this is normal, since it has been going on since the begging of time, this change of season, and I should just get used to it and accept it, but after being in hot and humid constantly for 30 years, this is an adjustment. Next year I will be more prepared and will make my exercise/sleep/eating/crafty adjustments and deal with it. I’ll be fine, it’s not forever, right?

Crochet hook roll up organizer

I have become obsessed with crochet hooks and having almost one in every color, size, design, and material. I didn’t realize there are ergonomic ones, wood ones, some made from bamboo, some out of plastic (of course), and the old school ones made from metal (those I inherited from my grandmother and mother). They were starting to take over the bottom of my bag and in not a very orderly fashion. So I decided to make up a roll up organizer stash for my hooks. I think the next one I make will have either some batting or lightweight fusible interfacing. I love the one I have, but I think it needs some more texture to it.

I tried making one with heavier material, for more texture, but it turned out too bulky and didn’t roll up very nicely.

I need to make one for my knitting needles, but in a different pattern so I don’t get them confused.

I’m trying to use up some of the stash of material I have accumulated over the years. I find material that I either love the pattern or the colors or it’s on sale or make up any old excuse it’ll do so I buy it and keep it like it’s some prized priceless antique, which is just ridiculous. I need to start purging. And making. It’ll do my soul (and my husband’s blood pressure) some good.

Although he’s one to talk, he’s lost count of how many fishing lures he has.

Monday Motivation

I don’t know why, (it should be the opposite), but this rainy weather today made me very motivated. I started on a knitting project using some yarn I bought years ago when I went to visit my sister in AZ, I broke out a bunch of ties I’ve collected to take apart and make into a skirt and ironed them and made some measurements for a pattern, and looking through all my patterns I remember this skirt (bottom right) and boy do I have a lot of material I can get started a-cutting and making skirts with pockets. I LOVE pockets! I wish more dresses had pockets.

Tomorrow is expected to have more rain also, and Wednesday too. No worries, I’ll get a lot done.

What have you been working on?

Monday motivation

The skirt for my Trash2Trends project. I have to sew all the pieces together, but other than that, it is done! The bodice is also finished, and if you noticed, I made a choker from some tubing to fancy the whole thing up. Have you ever tried to iron plastic? Kinda tricky, but so far, I haven’t melted anything, and cross my fingers, that won’t happen.

It’s been nice having my own crafty room downstairs with extra tables and room to work. It’s like my own workshop, it’s so nice to have the tools I need right there and available and where I can find them when I need them. Guys can have a wood shop, I can have a sewing shop. Hey….I like that name, The Sewing Shop. You heard it here first, don’t steal my idea.

Now I need to do an internet search to see if someone already has that name. Well, there’s one in Louisiana, Milford, Ohio, and Canterbury. No worries, I’ll make it work.

Anyway, putting the final touches on this week to get ready for next week’s show. If you are in the area, come see all the cool designs! You’ll be amazed at what people do with paper, and plastic bags, and rubber, and cardboard, and cd’s, and medical supplies….

Lazy Sunday

A little bit of work on my Trash2Trends project today. I’m sewing together some masks to make the bodice and it’s coming together quite nicely. This material is so easy to work with and pretty forgiving. I figure just a little bit every day and it’ll get done. I should have this done this week, then I need to finish the skirt. There are so many wrinkles in the skirt material and I’m trying to figure out a good way to remove them. I have a hand held steamer so I’m going to try that. I tried putting the skirt material in the dryer and setting it to ‘touch up’, which did seem to work, but left the material a little used looking. Not a good look.

A high of 36F tomorrow! Almost a heat wave after this past week, and it’s projected to be a high of 54F on Thursday! That’s t-shirt and short weather!

Enjoy your day.
