I like copper

Copper is such a pretty metal, and it is so soft, malleable, and easy to work with. It also makes some pretty amazing colors when it’s being heated. I have a lot of fun when I’m working with it; adding silver, stones, beads and then putting it through the tumbler to see how bright and pretty it turns out…it’s a good day.

Copper is also said to have some metaphysical and healing properties to it. There’s not scientific evidence to back this up, but some people swear by it. One thing I find interesting, is that copper is an excellent conductor of electricity. There are scientific studies that show that the human body conducts its own type of electrical charges to move cells through the body. So it makes me wonder, if the human body carries its own electrical charge, and copper is an excellent conductor of electricity, maybe wearing a copper bracelet actually can help with circulation? Just a thought.

Although I’d be careful putting on too much copper, I wouldn’t want to spontaneously combust.

Be careful out there.

Monday Motivation

Been hard at work cleaning up and organizing the crafty room in the basement

YES! I finally have a basement!

I have my desk set up for cutting material, I have my sewing table set up with my heavy duty machine and the serger is cleaned and oiled and working, my mannequin is at the side of the table ready to model my wares, and the steamer is anxiously waiting some work.

This is great! It’s been over 6 months since I’ve done any sewing, and just in the last week I’ve sat down to work on some bead work. Next up: doing something with all the metal I have and making some simple earrings.

SO ready.

What’s up Saturday

Thinking about all these beautiful things today and how lucky I am to have them in my life.
All is well here, keeping very busy, and some personal life changes happening. It’s all good stuff though.
I hope you are well.

These are some of my favorites – copper found wire, sterling ear wires and eye pins, and earth tone beads. About 4in/10cm long, and 3in/7.6cm wide. Hammered copper for style and texture.

Like them? You can find them here.

Final fitting

Theresa is as excited as I am! look at that happy face!

So after class yesterday we had our final fitting. The skirt fits perfectly and I just need to add some final touches to the bodice, throw together a hat and VOILA! C’est fini !

Needless to say, Saturday I will have some much better photos for viewing. She’ll have on full makeup and the hair will be done. Me – I’ll be comfortable in jeans, sneakers and a t-shirt because I’ll be busy backstage, mingling with guests beforehand, and if we win anything I am running out there like a football player that just scored the winning superbowl touchdown.

How “fitting” is that? Considering Sunday is superbowl day? Very punny indeed.

I will keep you posted as the big day arrives!

Yoga mat earrings

Over the weekend I made some earrings out of pieces of yoga mat for my Trash2Trends project. Here I’ll show you what I did to make them.  I used all this stuff you see below:

yoga mat earrings tute

Before I did anything, I cut some small slivers of yoga mat with my rotary cutter, and I punched one small hole in each piece of mat with small hole puncher thingy so I could loop the yoga mat pieces through the jump rings. It’s also preferable to use flat nose pliers, and pliers that do not have grooves in them, when working with metal. Flat nose pliers give you more security in holding the jump rings and smooth pliers will keep from leaving marks on your metal.

So to make the earrings, first I took a small jump ring and looped it onto the bottom of the ear wire, then closed that jump ring:

Then I took a larger jump ring and added 2 smaller pieces of yoga mat:

I looped that onto the small jump ring that’s attached to the ear wire and closed that jump ring:

Next I looped a longer piece of yoga mat onto a large jump ring…

…and attached that to the jump ring with the 2 smaller pieces of yoga mat. Here I made sure to attach this jump ring so that it fell in-between the other 2 smaller pieces of yoga mat:

and VOILA! yoga mat earrings!

These are very light and swingy, really fun. The only thing I noticed is that they are so lightweight that if I’m not paying attention, I almost lost one in the backyard. (I always test drive what I make). The longer piece of yoga mat kept hitting my neck which, evidently, pushed the earring up and out of my earlobe, so I would recommend adding some of those plastic ear wire backs to keep these on securely.

I do not have a good picture of these on a person and how they look, just yet, so bear with me. I’ll get one soon, I promise. Besides, the show is this weekend, I’ll have SOOOOO many pictures to show you soon enough.

Monday Motivation

cropped-sun-swarov.jpg

This is probably one of the most beautiful things I have ever made. I amaze myself that I can do those things, I’ve never been very good at beautiful things; nice, cute, lovely, attractive, functional, practical – those I can do. But beautiful? I’ve never really thought about that.

But I make things like this every once in awhile and I realize that I can do it. Because if I can do it once, I can do it again. I just have to believe.

And just do it.

here’s to just doing it today.

Monday motivation

The weather was actually cool – er this morning, which was freaking amazing for this time of year. Which reminded me that I need to get busy with the fall garden planting.

If you don’t know, there is very little you can plant here in Florida in a vegetable garden during the summer months. The heat, humidity, and summer bugs just ruin it. So planting starts in September and runs through about April.

Now, you can always plant onions year round. Most root vegetables are ok, but with the bugs, torrential rain, and threat of hurricanes, why chance it

I need to work on some more bags and earrings too.

With this albeit slight change in the weather, not only do I have an improved change in attitude, but a burst of energy. It’s amazing what less humidity can do.

How are your projects coming? Anything new and exciting?
