I like wearing t-shirts, they are comfy, easy to wear, a classic that goes with anything. But I don’t always like the cut of t-shirts, they look too boxy sometimes and are not very flattering for females.
So I decided to take my sewing scissors and see what fanciness I could fashion from a t-shirt.
I found an extra large men’s shirt (on sale of course at the goodwill) with a cool design on it and decided to cut off the sleeves and the neckline. I cut it fairly close together at the shoulders so that I could tie it back together, and VOILA! Fancy new shirt.
Now I just need to work out so my arms look good in the shirt.
It is a perfectly cold and rainy and crappy day here in the sunshine state (yes, really it is). We get these from time to time and I am not ashamed to say that I welcome them.
What!? You say? A break from the sunshine and warmth? Yes, I say that. And I say that because there is a reason for a break in the weather, there is a reason that animals go into hibernation once a year: it’s to give themselves a break, have a little down time to rest. All this constant hurry-hurry-hurry-let’s-do-this gets tiring after awhile.
Now, mind you, my dogs aren’t terribly happy about it today, but they will survive. I’ll take a sewing break later today and take them to the park. Hopefully it won’t be as cold around noon.
The kittens know enough to stay in when it’s raining, and during the day they are sleeping inside anyway.
I’m making some progress on my Trash2Trends piece:
Yesterday I added sleeves!
I’m trying not to cut I to too many pieces as they are just so beautiful. This has been challenging to say the least. Next week is the show, so come he’ll or high water it will have to be finished. I used to get really stressed about this stuff, but I’ve learned to let it go. It will get done and everything will work out exactly as it is supposed to. No worries.
So after a very busy day last Saturday, I’ve been inspired and busy and made a bunch of yoga mat earrings. An easy and relaxing thing to do after such a busy day.
Even though I didn’t win, I still had an awesome time at the Trash2trends show last week. To be around such creative energy was inspiring and exciting.
I think I’m really going to have to step up my game for next year. So many designs were so detailed and intricate and fancy; I am not fancy. I wish I were, but I’m not. I could be, but it would require a certain rewiring of my brain and thinking that may cause the same type of headache I got while writing APA style papers for a neurology class I took for my undergrad degree.
I hated, and loved, that class at the same time with the same degree of emotion. I wouldn’t take it back for a second.
I am a more practical, functional person, although I do like things to be aesthetically pleasing; I don’t want everything to be sterile gray metal or plain black and white. Now, though, I have a year to think about it.
So after class yesterday we had our final fitting. The skirt fits perfectly and I just need to add some final touches to the bodice, throw together a hat and VOILA! C’est fini !
Needless to say, Saturday I will have some much better photos for viewing. She’ll have on full makeup and the hair will be done. Me – I’ll be comfortable in jeans, sneakers and a t-shirt because I’ll be busy backstage, mingling with guests beforehand, and if we win anything I am running out there like a football player that just scored the winning superbowl touchdown.
How “fitting” is that? Considering Sunday is superbowl day? Very punny indeed.
I had a fitting with my model on Monday with the prototype I sewed together over the weekend and now I have a few tweaks to make. This choker, for example, is going to use a much smaller flower and thinner band around the neck. The back of the skirt is going to be shorter, and all the fringy pieces are going to be a LOT thinner and they’re going to double up. The pieces in the back will have to be a lot longer too.
I have some photos forthcoming from the fitting, so once you see those you’ll have a good idea of what I’m talking about.
I am just so happy that all the pieces I cut seemed to fit, and fit just right. All my model did was give me her measurements and I went from there. Using my handy dandy measuring tape – and the tried and true ‘eye-balling’ it method – it all turned out! Whee!
So I’ll work on it some more this weekend and I just might have it all done! Woot ! Woot !
As you can tell, Anna and Lola are thrilled for me:
Yep! It’s here! Mix and mingle with one of the fabulous sponsors for the Trash2trends show: ATRS Recycling
They will be hosting the meet and mingle, and very generously offering some of their items to the designers to use in their creations. Last year’s meet and mingle was a huge success and this year will be no exception. Some of last years design winners will be on hand to showcase their items, and the City of Orlando, Keep Orlando Beautiful (who puts on the event) will be on hand as well.
I’ll keep you posted with photos, follow along on Instagram for up to the minute info.
