Meditative work

I got my latest yarn of the month selection today in the mail (see that pretty ball of yarn in the photo next to my lovely girl Anna?) and was sitting on the couch winding it into a ball when it struck me how meditative that activity is. I supposed I could get me one of them fancy ball winders which would probably save a lot of time and aggravation, but I actually like taking the time to wind the yarn myself. To feel the softness of the yarn, and the texture as I’m winding it; to watch the yarn go from a very small bit of thread to a softball size of eclectic colors I can (softly) hurl at my husband’s head to get his attention; and the excitement and anticipation of what new project I’m going to make out of this fascinating little bit of material and how fabulous it’s going to look when it’s finished, and how accomplished I will feel once it’s done.

I’d like to think my life is immensely exciting and interesting and really it’s not. And that’s ok. I am perfectly happy and content winding yarn with puppies by my side nearly every day.

If only everyone was so lucky.

Have a meditative day.

Crochet hook roll up organizer

I have become obsessed with crochet hooks and having almost one in every color, size, design, and material. I didn’t realize there are ergonomic ones, wood ones, some made from bamboo, some out of plastic (of course), and the old school ones made from metal (those I inherited from my grandmother and mother). They were starting to take over the bottom of my bag and in not a very orderly fashion. So I decided to make up a roll up organizer stash for my hooks. I think the next one I make will have either some batting or lightweight fusible interfacing. I love the one I have, but I think it needs some more texture to it.

I tried making one with heavier material, for more texture, but it turned out too bulky and didn’t roll up very nicely.

I need to make one for my knitting needles, but in a different pattern so I don’t get them confused.

I’m trying to use up some of the stash of material I have accumulated over the years. I find material that I either love the pattern or the colors or it’s on sale or make up any old excuse it’ll do so I buy it and keep it like it’s some prized priceless antique, which is just ridiculous. I need to start purging. And making. It’ll do my soul (and my husband’s blood pressure) some good.

Although he’s one to talk, he’s lost count of how many fishing lures he has.

T-shirt mock up

I like wearing t-shirts, they are comfy, easy to wear, a classic that goes with anything. But I don’t always like the cut of t-shirts, they look too boxy sometimes and are not very flattering for females.

So I decided to take my sewing scissors and see what fanciness I could fashion from a t-shirt.

I found an extra large men’s shirt (on sale of course at the goodwill) with a cool design on it and decided to cut off the sleeves and the neckline. I cut it fairly close together at the shoulders so that I could tie it back together, and VOILA! Fancy new shirt.

Now I just need to work out so my arms look good in the shirt.

Monday Motivation

Been hard at work cleaning up and organizing the crafty room in the basement

YES! I finally have a basement!

I have my desk set up for cutting material, I have my sewing table set up with my heavy duty machine and the serger is cleaned and oiled and working, my mannequin is at the side of the table ready to model my wares, and the steamer is anxiously waiting some work.

This is great! It’s been over 6 months since I’ve done any sewing, and just in the last week I’ve sat down to work on some bead work. Next up: doing something with all the metal I have and making some simple earrings.

SO ready.

catching up

Thankfully it is sunny here today, but the weather outside is still very frightful as it’s 28F/-2C. I am amazed at how my dogs don’t seem to mind the cold, they just run around like crazy hyped up kids on sugar, checking out every tree for squirrel, sniffing the grass for whomever might have been there last, and letting the wind run through their hair like a shampoo commercial. It’s crazy. I tell them that I don’t have fur so it takes me a minute to get ready to go outside (the coat, hat, gloves, boots, scarf, etc), they don’t seem to understand, or care, so they are restless. (plus they don’t speak English)

So I am *almost* done with the right side of this Vee Excellent wrap.

I know. It’s only been 4 months since I started and the original test knit asked me to be done in 2 weeks. I am not good at knitting fast, and I have to wonder how these other women did it with families and kids and the house and other obligations. They must be super fast amazing wonder women knitters. Props to them. I’ll get there someday.

I have finished 2 simple skinny scarves (right), and am working on another one using the yarn on the left. The mandala colors look beautiful, but the way they made this particular acrylic yarn is too plastic-y for me, I don’t like the feel of it. I’ll finish it as it’s a present for my sister, but I won’t buy it again.

I think I am sensitive to certain fabrics; if they don’t feel right on my skin I won’t wear them. I realize I’m HSP so this is not terribly surprising. It kind of limits my fashion choices though and people see me as being very picky, at least I know this about myself and I’m ok with it.

I learned how to make a mala yesterday so now I am all excited and stoked to make some more. I have a bunch of beads that I don’t know what to do with them and this will be a good gift. The holidays are coming you know.

Hope you are well.

Lazy Sunday

Windy, chilly and rainy today so it’s a very lazy day. Lots of napping, watching American Pickers, and working on crafty stuff. I bought some extra large t-shirts at the local goodwill (half off of course) to make into t-shirt yarn so I can get me started on those crochet baskets I keep talking about. I’m so stoked that my crafty room is finally coming together! I’ve got my cutting desk, my sewing table, my sewing machine…now I just need to find my sewing machine foot pedal.

I know it’s here somewhere…

While I look for that, you have a restful day.

Lazy Sunday

Lola loves to jump around in the water, and she has started taking Toby's ball from him in a game of keep away. Then she decides to take the ball into the water, which isn't a good idea since she can't pick up the ball in the water, she only makes it sink more or she pushes it farther out in the water where I can't get it so then I have to send Toby out in the water to get the ball.

These are chuck-it balls, which aren't cheap, so I want the damn things back.

Look at her dirty face! This is what she's really like:

Don't let that cute little face fool you, she can be a terror.

Lounging around today, working on my knitting project, which, unfortunately, I know I'm not going to complete in time. That bugs me. I have been trying so hard for so long to finish what I start (and in a timely manner) that this is a step back. At least I tried, right?

Hey, has anyone seen these or tried them?

These are gorgeous and I would love to get one but they are SOOOOO very expensive I don't want to have serious buyers remorse. Does anyone have any feedback on these? I'd love to hear it.

I hope your day is restful.
Enjoy your day.

Monday motivation

making some drawstring bags

I had such a fun time making these drawstring bags on Saturday that on Sunday I had to make a few more. These were so easy, took less than half an hour each to make, and I had all kinds of t-shirt yarn to make the strings, that I just couldn’t help myself! It was craziness I tell you it’s like another obsession.

Honestly, when I learn a new skill, I need to do it over and over again as soon as I learn it so that way I can remember what I did and can repeat it, successfully. I’m very much a visual and hands on learner, so getting my hands on material/paper/pencil/dirt/copper wire/yarn and doing the task over and over again ensures that I’ll remember what I just did.

That’s probably why I didn’t do so well in math in grade school, is because as soon as I got out of class, I would forget what I just learned and I didn’t have spare time right after class to go over what I did, so by the time I was home I was totally clueless, and my parents tried, but they weren’t any good at math either. It helps that I like sewing and being crafty, that makes doing this over and over again so much fun.

The other week I learned how to *properly* make a zippered pouch, so now this is going to be another obsession for next weekend. I’m just so happy, and grateful, that the library offers these classes. I’m such a library geek, but I don’t care. I’m flying my geek flag high and proud!

Monday motivation

I found these great pieces of material when I was out this weekend. I can find some of the best stuff at the thrift stores. Interesting, one of a kind or no longer made items that are so unique and fun,  and “Oh my gosh I can’t believe this is still around” kind of stuff. These are ready to be made into my every day handy bag. It’s such a simple pattern and I didn’t get around to making myself one, or one for my family members or in-laws, I made a bunch of them for my coworkers. (They were a big hit BTW).

Some rain here today, which is much needed, my grass and garden is happy now.

Have a happy day.
