I don’t know about where you live, but here in Orange County we’ve seen a 74% increase in the number of pets surrenderd by owners, compared to this time last year. A shocking statistic, considering we didn’t have this many owner surrenders when the economy was in the tank during the Great Recession.
Most of the reasons people give for surrendering their pets are the same as before: “we’re moving to a new place and they don’t take pets”, “he escapes and chews up the rug”, “she barks too much, otherwise very loving”
These “excuses” just irritate the crap out of me. Pets, like children, aren’t pre-programmed to behave a certain way. They require time and patience to teach them correct behaviors. If it was just as easy to give up a child, like people do with their pets, I wonder how DCF would handle the influx of kids?
Come on now, we’ve all heard exasperated parents “joke” about giving their kids away because they’re not behaving.
Pets, like kids, require love, attention, exercise, and discipline. If you can’t afford that, don’t have either.
And that’s all I have to say about that.
Steps down off soap box.
